Social Movements of the 1960s
The 1960s is often described as a decade that shaped a generation and redefined our nation. Characterized by a variety of social movements, independent thinkers shook American society by challenging mainstream values and systems of belief. The fabric of our culture would never be the same.
Your group will create a wiki-page that analyzes a social movement of the 1960s:
(textbook p. 639, 696-717)
(p. 661, 662, 760-763)
(p. 662-663, 763-765)
(p. 737-738, 777)
The wiki you create will have 3 categories:
I. OVERVIEW & ANALYSIS (1 person will handle this) 10 pts
the goals or aims of each group, and problems they faced.
the organizations involved in the movement.
the goals (were they realistic, attainable, etc), and the organizations (were they effective, too elitist, contradicted other organizations, etc.)
the techniques or methods used in the movement to achieve the goals.
the effectiveness of their methods, giving some examples.
the solutions or accomplishments of the movement.
the political or social changes that resulted—was the movement effective in accomplishing its goals?
II. VOICES FROM THE MOVEMENT (1 person for each category) 10 pts each
Search for and select 2 video clips (from youtube.com, discoveryeducation.com, etc.) that are significant in their representation of the goals and methods of the movement.
Explain how this video accurately represents the movement more than any other, and what it teaches us about the movement.

Explain how each photo accurately represents the movement more than others, and what it teaches us about the movement.
Poem/Music & lyrics/Visual Art
Search for and select 2 pieces of art that are significant in their representation of the goals and methods of the movement.
Explain how each art piece accurately represents the movement more than others, and what it teaches us about the movement.
Search for and select 2 written primary documents that are significant in their representation of the goals and methods of the movement.
Explain how each document accurately represents the movement more than others, and what it teaches us about the movement.
III. CONCLUSION (Each member will help with this) 10 pts
the group’s situation today. For instance:
What are the current issues facing these groups 40 years later?
Have there been any further advancements or accomplishments since the 60s?
What are the current forms of the movement today?
What are the groups or organizations leading this movement today?
All information must be cited.
(10 points will be awarded for perfect citations-you will lose one point for every citation which is incorrect, missing or incomplete. Use the PUSD Writing with Style manual updated for MLA 7 or use NoodleBib.)
Use Microsoft Word to write; then copy and paste into the wiki. Too many people editing at the same time causes problems.
